You Suck (and Other Inescapable Truths)

YOU SUCK (And Other Inescapable Truths) documents the spirited misadventures of a Grade 9 Afrikaans underdog and her crucial survival-advice, as a minority in an Anglophile high school.

New-wave clown and comedienne Klara van Wyk captures the angst and confusion of the modern teen perfectly, complete with deadpan humour, sarcastic put-downs and withering social commentary.

A tempestuous dear-diary account of the horror that is secondary school, YOU SUCK will appeal to anyone who was made to feel inadequate by the “A group”, in this case led by queen bee and Grade-A bitch, Sarah Walker.

YOU SUCK is about falling apart, fitting in, getting even. It’s also hilariously funny, with Klara Van Wyk’s portrayal of the gum-snapping, rambunctious teen earning her a Fleur-Du-Cap nomination and Standard Bank Ovation in 2016. Van Wyk’s creation, zef trouble-maker Pretina de Jager will offer expert tips on how to:  hashtag like a celeb, crush the mean girl mafia, and twerk your way through teen angst.

Klara Van Wyk is a performer/writer and theatre-maker. She is currently doing her PhD in Clowning at Stellenbosch University.
